Early Career Teachers

The Early Career Framework (ECF) was established by the Department for Education to give teachers more training and development opportunities at the beginning of their careers.

As part of the ECF reforms, early career teachers are now able to receive two years of funded development support and training and access to a mentor who has experience in a similar setting.

We are excited to be working with two national Early Career Development providers: Education Development Trust in conjunction with Tudor Grange Teaching School Hub and Best Practice Network. Both programmes are built upon a deep knowledge of developing teachers and provide a continuous two-year journey for teachers early in their training and teaching careers.

Education Development Trust (EDT)

Developed with schools, our Early Career Framework materials provide a high-quality, evidence-informed blended learning experience for teachers and their mentors. Each topic includes rich and relevant examples from expert practitioners, accessible insights from research, and frequent opportunities to put knowledge into practice.

ECTs and ECT mentors have access to an online platform that supports the learning journey throughout the Programme, providing a range of self-study materials, videos, webinars, podcasts and blogs.

Early career teachers need time and space to reflect on and challenge their own practice. The EDT Programme is centred around developing the mentor relationship, and includes a carefully constructed programme of webinars, face-to-face training, and self-study activities to support this.

Each of these activities will provide opportunities for ECTs to learn the theory, put the theory into practice, and reflect on personal and professional development with the support of their mentor.

Best Practice Network (BPN)

The Early Career Development Programme has been designed with the Early Career Teacher in mind. The first years of a teacher’s career are vitally important for professional development and the best time to develop good habits and effective teaching strategies.

Flexibly delivered with the time constraints of an Early Career Teacher in mind, the programme comprehensively delivers all the content of the Early Career Framework and slots neatly into the schedule of an early career teacher.

  • Face-to-face and online webinars with leading experts
  • Regular meetings with an in-school mentor
  • Self-study featuring rich multimedia content including videos, practical tasks and discussion activities

What is the Early Career Framework?

The content of the ECF builds on and complements ITT. The ECF underpins what all Early Career Teachers should be entitled to learn about and learn how to do based on expert guidance and the best available research evidence.

As is the case for other professions, areas covered in initial training will be covered in greater depth as part of induction as teachers continue on their journey to becoming experts.

Early Career Teacher Schedule

Flexibly delivered through a combination of online webinars, face-to-face events and self-study, the programme slots neatly into the schedule of an Early Career Teacher.
